Although Summer has to be one of my favorite times of the year, it’s definitely not the easiest time when it comes to makeup. The typical Summer makeup woes include sweatiness, smudgy mascara, melting makeup, and a seriously shinny t-zone (for me at least). No fear! Here are my top tips to avoid any Summer makeup disasters and achieve a beautiful, effortless look that’s quintessentially Summer.
My Tips and Tricks
#1. Keep your base light. Especially if you live in a hot climate like I do, there is nothing worse then the feeling of heavy, sticky foundation on a hot, humid day. Thicker bases also tend to slide around your face as temperatures rise, leading to some serious makeup mayhem. I opt for a tinted moisturizer or bb cream with good coverage but a really light feel. This bareMinerals Complexion Rescue works amazingly because of its lightweight gel formula.
#2. Go for glowy, but not sweaty. During Springtime, there’s nothing prettier than adding illuminator into your foundation for a super dewy look. Unfortunately in Summer, dewy can begin to look a bit sweaty, especially on oily skins like mine. Instead, I’ll use my illuminators and highlighters only where I need them, like on the tops of my cheekbones, my brow bone, and my cupids blow. This way I still have a glowy look, but not a greasy one. Also, pick a golden toned illuminator, like this one from Tanya Burr Cosmetics, during Summer because it’ll pair perfectly with a tan.
#3. Trade in your contour for a bronzer. Part of what makes Summer beauty so fun is that it’s all about effortlessness. That’s why I always have a bronzer in my daily makeup bag. A little bit of bronzer thrown on the highpoints of the face is the perfect way to add some color. Plus, who has the time to fuss over conturing during Summer! This cream bronzing stick from Clinique is perfect because all you’ve got to do is swipe, blend, and you’re good to go.
#4. Choose a pop of color for the cheeks. A healthy glow on the cheeks is the perfect way to pull together this natural bronzy makeup. I like bright peaches and cool toned pinks for a fresh-faced look. This Benefit boxed blush in Galifornia is so beautiful, and it smells amazing.
#5. A one-and-done eye product is all you need. I’ll take no fuss makeup whenever I can, so going for a single eyeshadow that looks beautiful by itself is ideal. Personally, cream shadows are great for this because you can just swipe them on and blend them out with your finger. No brush required! The Laura Mercier caviar stick eye colors are so bendable and have a great color selection.
#6. Always go for waterproof. It’s pretty common for the brands of cult favorite mascaras to release a waterproof version come Summer. Thanks to the heat, humidity, sweat, and last minute beach trips, waterproof mascara is definitely a must. Don’t ruin your beautiful Summer makeup with a smudgy, runny mascara. Just go waterproof! Some of my favorite mascaras, the Tarte lights camera lashes and Too Faced better than sex, come in waterproof formulas.
#7. Bright lips are definitely best. I love throwing on a bright lip during Summertime. It’s the best way to complete a quick and easy makeup look, while still looking put together. I like to prep my lips with a balm, throw on some lipstick, and use my finger to pat the color into the lips. This gives an effortless, stained look to the lips that wears beautifully throughout the day. Ditch those heavy matte formulas, because who wants to have to worry about your lipstick anyway. This creamy lipstick from Tanya Burr Cosmetics is perfect, plus the line carries so many amazing colors!
