I have been a fan of MAC Cosmetics eyeshadow for years. I think they have good color payoff, an amazing selection of finishes and shades, and are easy to use. A few years ago, MAC shadows were the end-all-be-all of the eyeshadow world. Since then, things have changed, and many more brands have come out with incredible eyeshadow formulas, many of which rival if not beat that of MAC. Regardless, MAC eyeshadows form a staple in many people’s makeup collections, including mine, and their cult following is not to be ignored.
How to Start Your Own MAC Eyeshadow Collection for Less
I’ve collected MAC eyeshadows for years, which is how my collection has been able to grow to the size it is today. The amazing thing about powder products such as eyeshadow is that they last for years. Because of this, starting an eyeshadow collection can be a good makeup investment. I began my collection when I was 16, asking for specific colors for birthdays and Christmasses. Most of these eyeshadows came in individual pots and cost around $16 each. Building a collection at $16 a pop is quite expensive so over the years I learned how to save some money at MAC.
- Sign up for the MAC Cosmetics email list. When you sign up for the MAC email list, you’ll receive alerts for sales and other opportunities to save money. I’ve purchased the majority of my collection during the sales in order to spend less.
- Purchase the eyeshadow pans, NOT pots. The MAC eyeshadow pans are the individual pans of eyeshadow that you see in palettes. They are magnetic and pop easily into the empty palettes (insert or no insert). The best part about them is that they are $6 (!!), much less than the pots which are $16. Plus, it’s really annoying to have to remove the pans from the pots in order to stick them into your palette. Unfortunately, you can only buy the pans either online or in MAC stores, not at counters.
- Purchase the empty palettes. A few years ago, MAC dramatically lowered the price of their empty palettes from $25 to $8 each. Although these are without the inserts, which run from $1 to $3, these palettes end up saving you money because you can purchase the eyeshadow pans, not the pots. They also give you the ability to customize your own palette based on colors, finishes, most-used, or how ever you like!
- If you’re just starting your MAC eyeshadow collection or are looking to easily expand your collection, purchasing the pre-made palettes from MAC is a great way to save some money. A palette of 9 colors is $32 and a palette of 15 colors is $65! That’s huge savings. To design your own 15 shadow palette with the individual pans would cost $90, so buying premade saves you $25. These palettes are usually themed by undertone and include many of their most popular shades. I have one of these palettes full of warm tones.
How Much Are You Actually Saving?
For example, I have 53 shadows in my MAC collection. If I bought them all by the pot, that would have cost me almost $850!!! Yikes. Good thing I knew how to save some money at mac cosmetics because if you buy the same amount of shadows by the pan, you spend $318. Such a HUGE difference in savings, $530 to be exact. Also, if you’re not super picky about which shadows you want or if you’d prefer a well curated palette opposed to designing your own, the pre-made palettes are definitely the way to go. You could build your collection to 45 shadows for only $195! Again, more savings!
