With chilly weather in full decent, I thought it was about time to talk about arar. I’ve only recently been able to fully embrace the statement that a coat or jacket can have thanks to my last few years living in Los Angeles. Now that I’m on the East Coast, I’ve had the opportunity to break out my autumn and winter outerwear & jackets staples and share my tips on when and where to spend and save.
Since I’ve only recently graduated and ended my career as a student, I’m still very much concerned with affordability. I like to know when to spend and where to save my money, how to find great deals, and which pieces are the best investment.
Going for Trends? | Save
If you’re looking for trendy items or pieces you’re only planning on wearing for a season or two, I always opt for less expensive items. For example, last year houndstooth was all over, but this year plaid has taken its place. When you think about the price per wear, it only makes sense to save your money for the pieces you plan on wearing year after year and gravitate towards more in-expensive items for trend-driven pieces. Stores such as H&M and Forever 21 are perfect examples of places where you can find trendy pieces that won’t break the bank.
Focusing on Utility? | Splurge
If you’re looking for outerwear & jackets that will not only make a fashion statement but will also perform a key utilitarian role in your wardrobe, I’d recommend you splurge. A good example of this is my Barbour jacket. This jacket acts as a wind blocker, raincoat, and provides warmth especially when layered. Because of this, I wear this jacket more than any other outerwear piece in my wardrobe. It simply comes in handy more than my more fashion-driven pieces. Plus, since I spent a little more and purchased a high-quality piece from a reputable brand, I know this jacket will last me years. It’s four years old and it looks brand new!
Looking for a Statement? | Splurge or Save
I love a good statement coat. I think it can effortlessly unit an outfit and make you look sophisticated and put together. A statement coat can come in many forms, colors, shapes, and styles. I select my statement piece price based on how much wear I think I’m going to get out of the piece. Some pieces make such a statement that you can only wear them so often without seeming repetitive. For these styles, I’d recommend saving rather than splurging.
Other coats can make a statement simply with their classic style, elegant fit, or quality design. For these more timeless pieces, I would recommend splurging on one you’ve fallen in love with. You’ll be reaching for these styles for years, so why have to retire a favorite simply because its quality couldn’t stand the test of time.
Choosing a Classic Style? | Splurge
I think that everyone needs at least one version of a classic style coat. Whether that’s a trench, a peacoat, a belted coat, a menswear-inspired overcoat, a faux-fur coat, or a leather or denim jacket, these styles will stay current for years to come. If going for one of these classic styles in the traditional neutral tones such as camel, black, or grey, I’d definitely try to find a high-quality piece that you love. Splurge on this one. You won’t regret it!
Trying a New Style? | Save
If you’re trying out a new style for the first time and you’re not sure how well it will suit you or how it will fit into your wardrobe, go for a less expensive option. It’s better to save a little money and fall in love with a new style, then spend a bunch of money on something you never end up wearing! For example a few years ago I splashed out a sequin blazer thinking that it would be the perfect statement with a t-shirt and jeans. I think I wore it once, if even! So don’t learn the hard way like I did, because outerwear & jackets can be so expensive! Test out that new style on the high street before opting for something more luxurious.
What I’m Wearing
If you’re interested in any of the garments I’m wearing in these photos, they’re all from Zara last season. I’ve linked some similar styles of both this classic coat and fun booties below if you want to check them out! They’re all pretty affordable.
Hopefully these tips help you find your next favorite winter coat or stylish jacket. I’m obsessed with outerwear & jackets, and use these tips to find the pieces I can’t live without!
