My Morning Skincare Routine

I have always found skincare to be an extremely important element in my beauty routine. Your skin is your base and you’re stuck with it forever, so why not take proper care of it. I believe that good makeup starts with the skin; if you have a nice base, then your makeup applies so much nicer. With healthy beautiful skin, you won’t need much coverage and you can let your natural beauty shine through.

I know this is a nice thought, but many people struggle with having a flawless complexion. I, myself can attest to this. My skin is oily and prone to breakouts, especially clogged pores. I have dark circles that I can thank my parents for and a not so perfectly even complexion. There are endless products from many lines that claim to provide you with healthy, even, and beautiful skin, but the supply and choices are really daunting. This can scare many people away from the skincare world. So lets start slow with my morning routine.

The first way I tackle my skin, is to target my problem areas. Starting with my breakout prone skin and large pores, I use a physical exfoliant every-other-day. This way I can pull some of the gunk out of my pores as well as remove the outer layer of dry and dead skin that keeps my skincare products from thoroughly absorbing. I enjoy a physical exfoliant opposed to a chemical exfoliant because chemical exfoliants often feel very harsh on my skin and make me feel dry. Also, there is a kind of satisfaction you feel after (gently) scrubbing your face and feeling it’s new softness. My favorite exfoliant at the moment is St. Ives Even & Bright Citrus scrub which smells like oranges. This has very gentle, natural beads which feel like smooth sand on your skin. If you’re looking for a product with a bit more blemish fighting power, I also love the St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub for acne prone skin.

For the rest of my morning skincare, I like to feel refreshed and clean. I start off everyday, after my scrub if I’ve used it, with my Purity Cleanser by Philosophy. I’ve used this cleanser for years and I love it so much because it’s gentle and has a built in toner to pH balance my skin. To help with my oiliness, I use L’Occitane Ultra Matte Fluid. This helps mattify my skin and help my makeup last a lot longer. I focus this mostly in my T-zone and my cheekbones where I also get a bit oily. After this step, I apply my Origins GinZing eye cream. This light gel-cream formula depuffs and refreshes your eyes with coffee bean and has a slight shimmer to brighten tired eyes and dark circles. This is perfect for me because being a college student, I often get little sleep. I know I love this cream because I really miss it when I run out. Also, remember to apply your eye cream before your moisturizer because it will absorb into the delicate skin around your eye better. Next, I apply my Aveeno Smart Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer with SPF 30. This first caught my eye when I was looking for a daily sunscreen that was non-sticky and wouldn’t clog my pores like many of the previous face sunscreens I had tried. This was the best of both worlds, a light daily moisturizer with a good amount of SPF that was made with natural ingredients and was hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic to help with my break-out prone skin. Plus it has a fresh scent that doesn’t smell like sunscreen. This one bottle lasted me almost a year and I just repurchased it. Lastly, I apply a chapstick to prep my lips for a lipstick when I apply my makeup. My current favorite is the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. This citrus flavored lip treatment is very nourishing and has a wonderful creamy texture that moisturizes your lips for hours. Overall, I try to keep my morning skincare routine pretty simple, basic, and fresh. I’ve used most of these products for years and love them. I don’t imagine changing up this system anytime soon.
