I love to travel! I find that seeing the world and experiencing new cultures not only helps me to appraciate the amazing divsersity that we as a global community are surrounded by, but it also motivates and drives me creatively. I feel very lucky to have seen as much of the world as I have already, but I know in my heart that I’m a restless individual and I’ll always be looking for new opportunities to get out and see new and beautiful places. Unfortunately, how to look pretty and travel at the same time can be a bit challenging. It’s hard to be out of your space and routines and no longer surrounded by your beauty collection. Thanks to all my travels, I’ve been able to effectively narrow down my travel makeup bag so that I have all the essentials I need, but haven’t overpacked.
Palettes, Palettes, Palettes
Palettes are essential for me when traveling. I love being able to eliminate a bunch of single pieces of makeup for a small palette containing a bunch of things I need. For face palettes, I’m always looking for, most importantly, a good blush and bronzer/contour. Having a highlight or a setting powder is also great and can make a palette perfect for eliminating clutter in your makeup bag. Nars, Charlotte Tilbury, Hourglass cosmetics have amazing face palettes.
In terms of eyeshadow, I like to choose a neutral palette that can take you from day to night. I always select palettes with a diversity of shades, especially for mattes. Ones that include both light neutrals for day-to-day as well as darker tones for eyeliner or smokey looks are preferable.
I always use a powder because I have oily skin. It’s great for setting your makeup and for touch-ups throughout the day. Unfortunately, my typical loose powder can be quite messy when traveling, so I always swap it out for a pressed powder. Here are my favorites!
Again, my strategy for packing when it comes to makeup is to reduce the number of products I take, so multi-tasking products are always my go-to. This definitely applies to concealer. I always take with me one of my trusty concealers that has great coverage and looks beautiful both under the eyes and covering blemishes. These ones are great!
Foundation that has Buildable Coverage
I can often get carried away when it comes to my base. I’d like to pack a base for every occasion, but over the years I’ve realized that this is just a waste of space. The only one I really need is a foundation with buildable coverage. I go for a base that will look good when applied with a light hand or beauty blender, but can also pack a punch in terms of coverage for a night out or an event. I often gravitate towards stick formulas because they travel easily and are great for buildable coverage. These ones are my go to travel foundations.
Limiting Lip Options
I used to pack so many different lipsticks it was overwhelming when I opened my makeup bag. Now I’ve streamlined my lippie list to include only one nude and two bolds. I usually choose comfortable formulas that will last, but won’t be drying. The colors will change and rotate based on the seasons and trends, so they aren’t often the same. Regardless, here are some of my favorite formulas that I’ve packed again and again.
Smudge Proof Long Lasting Mascara
Personally, there’s nothing worse than returning to your hotel or airbnb after a long day just to find mascara smudged all along your lower lashline and on your eyelid. I find this so frusterating! My number one requirement for mascara is that it can hold its own against the elements, especially when you travel because most of your days are spent out exploring, in rain or shine. Over the years, I’ve tried a lot of mascaras searching to find smudge proof formulas that also give incredible volume. Often waterproof mascara will look great all day, but I find these formulas a little dissappointing in the volume department. So here are my favorite non-waterproof formulas that hold up all day.
* A quick tip to prevent your eye makeup from smudging is to dip your damp beauty blender in loose powder (not so great for travel, but the mini loose powders actually hold up pretty well!) and pat the sponge under your eye area and on your eyelid to set your concealer all day. Reducing any moisture from your makeup around your eye area will help keep your mascara from smudging and transferring.
Eyebrow Product for Effortless Brows
Doing my eyebrows is my least favorite part of my makeup routine. It’s probably because I am a bit lazy when it comes to getting them done, so they can get pretty crazy. Also I’m not interested in spending a lot of time doing my makeup when I travel, so I look for any way to shave off a few minutes here and there. Because of this, I’m all about simplified brown routines. For me, the most effortless way I can do my brows is with some kind of tinted gel. I especially love those with volume building fibers such as these ones!
I hope you found this post helpful! I love to travel so coming up with a routine to minimize clutter and limit my baggage can really help me reduce stress. By following these tips you’ll easily know how to look pretty, effortlessly when you travel.
