I have to say, when I first unwrapped this Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick from its packaging, I was a bit skeptical. From what I had read, Hourglass had made a lot of promises about this product’s performance, and to be honest, they all seemed a bit too good to be true. I have owned stick foundations in the past, I have two shades of the Bobbi Brown foundation sticks, but when compared to the other base formulas in my collection, they see little use. I guess in my experience, foundation sticks can be thick and heavy feeling on the skin and are rather tough to blend. They often emphasize my pores and are a bit too heavy coverage (for my preference) for day-to-day wear. This Hourglass one promised to be different, so I definitely was intrigued. After putting it to the test for two weeks, I feel like I can give a pretty accurate assessment of my feelings towards this foundation, so here it is.
The first feature of this foundation is that it supposedly has “double the amount of pigment vs. traditional foundations for instant full coverage” (Hourglass). From the moment you begin blending this foundation into your skin, you understand this accuracy of this statement. This foundation, with just a few swipes on the skin, has seriously high coverage. With a light hand, it has medium coverage, but it easily builds into full coverage with a second (tiny) layer. The second feature is that the “formula adjusts to body temperature to blend into the skin for the smoothest, most seamless finish“. I’m not quite sure about this temperature adjusting feature, but the foundation is incredibly bendable. It easily melts into the skin making blending a breeze and giving even coverage. I use the Vanish foundation brush (which I adore!) to blend the foundation in circular motions into the skin effortlessly, but any dense kabuki style brush will do. The creaminess of the foundation blends in almost like a liquid, but without any heaviness. This is definitely my favorite feature of this foundation.
The next feature is its “12 hour long-wearing, waterproof formula“. I can’t vouch for its waterproof ability since I never wore this foundation to the beach or pool, but it has held up beautifully in the 100% humidity of the South East. This foundation did not budge all day along. I didn’t notice any transferring either, which is awesome, but the oils in my skin did start appearing after about 8 hours. So if you’re oily, then this foundation may need a blotting powder or paper touchup half way through the day. Being pretty used to that, this problem didn’t bother me too much. On a good note, the foundation never broke up in my oily areas, it simply appeared a bit shinny. The last benefit of this foundation is that it comes in 26 shades, which is amazing. The shade range is so diverse that I think anyone can find their match in this foundation. Although I have fair skin that is pretty easy to find shades for, I do appreciate Hourglass’s effort to cater to those of all skin colors.
Lastly, here are more of my personal observations. I was relived to find that this foundation does not emphasize my pores, which is amazing in comparison to other stick foundations I’ve tried. Although the formula is very creamy, I wouldn’t call this foundation hydrating, but it’s definitely not drying. I’d recommend layering a hydrating primer or moisturizer (like this one) under this foundation if you’re very dry and using a mattifying, oil control primer (like this one) if you’re super oily like me. A quick tip for application, a little of this foundation goes a long way, so start small and build up coverage only in the areas that you need it. This will give you a flawless, but natural coverage that can be worn day-to-day or built up for evening wear.
Overall, I am a huge fan of this foundation. It performed amazingly well and it’s so comfortable to wear. If you’re looking for a more full coverage foundation formula, I’d definitely recommend to check this one out. I don’t think it will disappoint. Check out how I apply this foundation in this video!
