Something that I don’t talk about here very often is my diet, eating habits, or food rarely at all. I guess I’ve always wanted to keep this a beauty focused space, but I think that your health is such an important part of beauty that I can’t resist sharing.
I’m actually super passionate about nutrition, not quite as passionate as I am about makeup, but it’s pretty close. I’ve been a vegetarian for around a year and a half now and am currently an aspiring vegan. Going plant based is a major goal of mine, but sometimes it can be difficult to part with delicious things like cheese or cookies, cakes, etc…so I’m working on it. At this moment I’ve adopted kind of a weird diet inspired by the kick-a** new Senator of California, Kamala Harris. This is a vegan until 6 diet, which means that I eat only plant based foods until 6pm at night, leaving dinner to resume my normal vegetarian-ness. I cut myself some slack on the weekends, but I’m usually really good about sticking to this routine.
I discovered juicing through one of my previous attempts to be vegan, this past Summer. When visiting my parents, I decided to dust off their rarely used juicer and start getting creative. I created some wins, and definitely some fails, but through all my practice, I started to gain confidence with this whole juicing thing. I learned what I like, what I don’t, and what makes me feel great. I think that juicing is an incredible way to make sure you’re getting your servings of fruits and vegetables a day with all those essential vitamins and minerals necessary for a healthy body. I’ve seen such amazing results in my skin and my immune system after incorporating regular juicing into my diet. So without further ado, here’s my favorite juice recipe!
I’m a huge fan of a healthy juice packed with fruits and veggies that also satisfies my sweet tooth. I also have a bit of a sensitive stomach, so I tend to avoid many “intense” flavors like ginger, but of course, add anything you want to this recipe to customize it to your preferences! Plus, this recipe is perfect for beginners.
- 3 carrots
- 1 apple
- 1 orange
- 1 lemon
- 1 beet
* optional: sometimes I like to throw in a handful of kale or spinach to add more of a punch to my go-to morning veggie selection. Also, the sweet fruity flavors can help mask the “green-y-ness”, if you not a huge fan of leafy greens.
The first thing I do is wash all my ingredients. Then I begin prepping by slicing the apple, raw beet, and cutting the skin off the orange and the lemon. Make sure to cut off the skin on the citrus, otherwise your juice will be really bitter (I’m sorry, I know it’s a hassle). Also, try not to skip the lemon. I think the lemon really helps cut through the sweetness of all the fruits and really balance out the flavors. Next, throw all your ingredients in your juicer and start juicing!
I love this particular juicer from Breville because it has different settings for different types of fruits and veggies based on their density. Softer fruits have lower numbers, and harder veggies have high numbers. There are also examples like citrus, apple, and pineapple next to coordinating numbers to help you out.
Once your juice is done, I like to swirl around the pitcher that collects the juice to mix it all together and put it aside. Next, I disassemble the juicer and start washing up while I wait for the froth at the top of the juice to rise to the surface. I’m not a huge fan of the froth, so this is why I do this step. Then, I’ll pour myself a big glass of delicious fresh juice and voila, I’m done! Easy as that!
Although juicing can seem a bit intimidating with all the fuss around juice cleanses and special juice bars, but I promise it’s not as difficult as it seems. There are countless amazing recipes out there that can get you started. Even if you don’t have a juicer, green smoothies are an amazing alternative, or you can even buy your own fresh juices at the store and mix them yourself to create your own concoction. I’ve loved this morning tradition of mine and it’s made such an amazing impact on how I feel, how my skin looks, and the strength of my immune system.
Let me know if you want me to share more of my juice recipes with you all, or even some other vegan/vegetarian recipes in general!
