Contrast in Fashion

I have always appreciated contrast in fashion. Whether it’s with colors, like black and white, or fabrics, like soft lace and hard leather. In clothing, contrast looks sophisticated and modern; it’s easy to dress up with a special bag and heels or dress down with sandals or booties and simple makeup. When ever I want to look sophisticated, for an interview, a presentation, etc., or stylish, for a night out with friends or a date, I am consistently drawn to clothing pieces that complement each other through their differences. Whether it’s adding and edgier vibe to a sundress or lightening up a pair of black skinny jeans with a delicate, feminine top.

When I am creating an outfit, I like to remind myself that opposites attract. I think it’s fun to experiment a bit more with contrast, more than just black and white. I enjoy combining neons and neutral tones because the neutral complements the bright color, without competing with it. Allow one article of clothing to be the statement piece and keep the neutral piece in its same tone range.

Masculine and feminine pairings are also a favorite of mine. I like wearing leather pieces such as belts, jackets, or bottoms paired with a girly top or dress. These contrasting pieces really complement each other because they give the outfit a unexpected twist with a boho, grungy, or edgy vibe.

Lastly, I like using contrasting elements to dress up an outfit, such as heels with boyfriend jeans or a little black dress with statement shoes. This way you can easily re-wear those effortless pieces from your wardrobe by adding a surprising statement.

So here’s an example of one of my favorite outfits. I am wearing black leather shorts with a lacy, beaded, girly top. My shoes are a neutral tone with stud embellishments and my bag is a snakeskin purse with a gold shoulder strap. These sophisticated pieces work together to add an edgy vibe to the outfit. Lastly, I painted my nails and lips in bright, feminine, pinky shades to contrast the edginess from the leather, studs, and snakeskin. I love contrasting my clothing pieces to create unique combinations that allow me to experiment with trends and breath new life into my everyday favorites.
