Concealer was the first makeup product that really changed the game for me. I remember being in middle school and getting ready for Cotillion (a southern type of adolescent torture in the form of ballroom dancing classes) and using shimmery nude eyeshadow to cover up my blemishes (I do not recommend). This was definitely the lowest point in all my makeup experiences, but I feel like we’ve all been there. The day that I finally discovered concealer was when everything changed. I could finally cover up my teenage acne and dark circles and begin to grow out of the awkwardness that was adolescence.
Since then, I’ve become somewhat of a concealer hoarder. I justify my abundant collection by firstly, describing concealer as my favorite makeup item. I would choose this as my only product on a desert island. That’s commitment. And secondly, as my most used item in my makeup routine. Sometimes I use three different concealers…is that high maintenance? Nah. Just the confessions of a hoarder. All in all, I would prefer to never live a day without on of these handy dandy imperfection erasers.
Over the years, I’ve acquired a vast number of concealers and tried out many more than aren’t even represented in this current collection. These are my 9 favorites; the ones that have lasted the test of time and my rigorous expectations. Hopefully, one of these will suit your needs.
My Concealer Collection
These concealers are listed from highest to lowest coverage. Also, note that I set ALL of these concealers with a powder because I have oily skin. But setting your concealer keeps it from creasing and helps it last all day long.
Kat Von D Lock-it Concealer Creme: This is the most recent high end addition to my collection. Having by far the thickest consistency, this super high coverage concealer is seriously intense. I recommend using the warmth of your finger to help blend this into the skin because otherwise it can look a bit heavy. Although this isn’t my most reached for concealer, it covers blemishes amazingly. It’s even advertised as tattoo covering!
NARS Radient Creamy Concealer: This guy is my favorite and most used concealer, especially since NARS expanded their color range to better fit fair ladies like myself. It has a creamy consistency and is definitely full coverage. I like to use the peachy color, crème brulée, over the darkest areas of my under eyes to completely cover and cancel out my dark circles. It’s such an amazing product and has great lasting power. It’s my top multi-use concealer and perfect for travel.
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer: This is my favorite high coverage, multi-use concealer from the drugstore. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get your hands on in the US, but you should be able to find it using my link above. Similar in consistency with the NARS concealer, but less mousse-y and more creamy, this concealer has serious coverage that’s on par with both of the high end concealers previously mentioned. Plus it’s super affordable. Definitely one to try out!
Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Concealer: Another great and super popular concealer, this guy from Urban Decay is not one to disappoint. Its really lightweight and fluid formula makes application and blending a breeze. It has also got great coverage. Unfortunately the shade range is kind of weird, so I definitely recommend testing it out in store before you buy.
MAC Pro Longwear Concealer: This is my go-to concealer for a “no makeup makeup” look. Having great coverage, anti-creasing technology, and being waterproof makes this one perfect for the adventuring and traveling girl on the go. It’s also my top pick for the beach and pool. I like popping this on wherever I need it for a fast and easy base.
Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Concealer: Although this isn’t my most reached for concealer, this MUFE one is really nice. Having medium, but buildable coverage that looks beautiful all over the face makes it a great multi-tacker. The squeezey tube packaging also keeps it super hygienic for those germaphobes out there. I love taping the more yellow toned shade, Y23, into the inner corner of my eye to brighten it up.
Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer: This product has the same medium level of coverage as both the MUFE and MAC ones, but it’s super affordable. I like the brush wand for precision application and the light but pigmented formula is great for brightening the under eyes. This is a staple in my collection because it looks so good paired with a dark circle corrector (check out my post here!).
Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer: I fell in love with this concealer last Spring and haven’t stopped using it since. It’s a perfect under eye pick me up because it’s so brightening and has decent coverage, but I do like using this all around my face as well. The light formula makes it super natural because it blends effortlessly into the skin.
Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer: This was the first drugstore concealer I ever fell in love with. Being very brightening, this product is perfect for highlighting under the eyes and on the high points on the face. Great for “no makeup makeup” days and those lucky ladies without dark circles. I love to use it on my brow bone to sculpt and shape my eyebrows.
Thanks for making it to the end! Hopefully this post helped you identify the concealer to best fit your needs. The next on my list to test out is the new NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer. I’ve heard amazing things. Let me know in the comments below what your favorite concealer is! I’d love to hear your recommendations.
